The strongest rhyme engine on the planet, free for everyone
sngwrtr’s Rhymes tab is a free rhyming dictionary for songwriters, rappers and poets. Type a word, a phrase or a whole lyric line and it finds every rhyme that sounds right when you sing it, including slant rhymes and multi-syllable rhymes most rhyme sites never show.
The problem with other rhyme sites
Most rhyme sites look a word up in a fixed dictionary and sort the results by dictionary rules, into differences nobody hears in a song. They give you one long list with the useful rhymes buried, assume everyone has the same accent, and give up on any word they have never seen.
How sngwrtr rhymes: by sound, syllable by syllable
Every rhyme site starts the same way, by breaking a word into its sounds with IPA, the alphabet linguists use to write down speech. IPA on its own will not find you a rhyme. It splits hairs no singer hears, and it files apart sounds that rhyme perfectly the moment a line is sung.
The part that took eight months
What sngwrtr does next is its own, and it is the reason the results are better. Those IPA vowels are grouped into a much smaller set of sounds that behave the same way in a song, so words other sites keep in separate lists land together here. “Midnight” is [ih] + [eye], and you get every word and phrase that lands on those two sounds: insight, inside, sit tight, flip side. That is the surface of it. What decides a grouping, and what happens once a rhyme runs across several syllables, stays under the hood.
Built on how lyric writing is taught at Berklee
The approach follows the way rhyme is taught to songwriters at Berklee College of Music, where a rhyme is judged by its vowel sounds and its stresses, and rhymes are grouped into types: perfect, family, additive, assonance and consonance. Close rhymes come first, looser ones after, so you can pick exactly how tight the rhyme should be.
A column for every syllable
Results come back in columns, one for each vowel sound and more for multi-syllable rhymes, including ones with extra syllables in between. Filter to nouns, verbs or adjectives, and search a whole line to rhyme its last few syllables.
Rhymes for your accent
American, British and Australian English say many vowels differently. Pick yours and the rhymes follow the way you speak. If a word still isn’t how you say it, change it: “route” can rhyme with “boot” or with “out”, and your rhymes follow your choice.
Type anything, even words that don't exist
Made-up words, slang, names and whole phrases are sounded out the moment you type them. Save a new word to your own list, or send it to us so it can be added for everyone.
Checked by people, and always growing
127,000 words and phrases are in Rhymes right now, and every one of them has been sorted by hand. Nothing sits in the engine that a person has not looked at. Writers send in new words and pronunciation fixes, and each one is checked before it goes live for everyone.
